The Belt Parkway is the single biggest source of Bay Ridge windshield damage. It runs right along the shoreline below Shore Road, it is resurfaced in sections constantly, and the loose stone from those works gets picked up and thrown by every truck on it. Sand blown off the shore stretch adds a fine grit that wipers grind into the glass until it hazes. Above Third Avenue, the elevated expressway deck sheds debris onto the roadway below, so cars crawling underneath collect chips at low speed. Then there is the wind. Bay Ridge takes weather straight off the Narrows, and a gust that lifts a trash can lid or slams a car door onto a half-open window ends the same way, with a broken pane and glass in the door.
The easiest run from most of Bay Ridge is Fort Hamilton Parkway. Pick it up anywhere along the neighborhood's inland edge and follow it toward the 40s streets, then turn out onto 47th Street to 19th Avenue. From the 86th Street side, take 86th east to 18th Avenue and go up from there. Give it fifteen minutes off-peak and longer when the bridge and expressway ramps are backed up.
